How do I qualify to build a house with Habitat?

Habitat homeowners qualify based on income, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. See What we Do for details.

What does a house cost?

This varies from person to person and depends on a few different factors, including your income, debt load, credit, and need. You only build as much house as you can afford, and work within your budget to meet your needs.

What if I’m limited in how much I can help with construction?

Although every new Homeowner is required to contribute 1000 hours of work over the course of the group build, we don’t expect, nor want, anyone to do this entirely themselves. You are encouraged to build a support team early on of people that are willing and ready to help you reach your total. No one will ever be expected to do something they are not comfortable with.

Do I need to know how to build a house?

Definitely not! Everything you will need to know to complete your build will be taught to you in a welcoming environment. Most of the Homeowners we’ve worked with in the past had no prior construction knowledge before beginning their build.

How do I volunteer?

Volunteering with Habitat is a fun, rewarding, and can even be an educational experience! It is easy to sign up using our individual volunteer sign-up form or our group volunteer sign-up form. After filling out the appropriate form, someone from our staff will reach out to you to set up a volunteer event. It’s really that easy! Also, be sure to like us on Facebook to stay up to date with new volunteer opportunities and public events.

What is it like to volunteer with Habitat?

We have put together an article talking all about this topic. Click here to read about what it’s like to be an individual volunteer, sign-up as a group, or help out at our ReStore. There is no experience required to volunteer. We will provide training to our volunteers as necessary. Also, we never ask anyone to do any work that they are not comfortable doing.

What is the ReStore?

The Habitat for Humanity Restore of Southwest Montana works similar to a thrift store for building materials. It is a store that is open to the public. The store is also always looking for donations of new or gently used goods. For more information on this staple of the Habitat community, please check out their Facebook Page.
